Where should my gas meter be located?
There are regulations around the installation of your new meter which must be adhered to. But in general terms, the ideal location for a gas meter is on an external wall that’s no more than 2 meters from the corner of the property on either side of a door or sealed window.
Does a gas meter have to be located outside?
Not always, there are certain circumstances where the meter has to be positioned inside the building, for example:
- Large industrial estate
- Communal areas in blocks of flats
- In the plant room of an office building
Some properties have a boundary wall directly in front of a public footpath. In this case, we would install the meter inside the property.
Installing a gas meter inside your property
If your would like your new gas meter installing inside your property (subject to a low-pressure gas connection being available), it will need to be located as close to the gas pipe entry point as possible to reduce the risk of a gas leak.
It’s highly recommended that the meter is closed off in a housing of some sort and away from any heat source, food and combustible material.
Can you install your own gas meter?
Since gas is a highly flammable material, attempting any work on any section of your gas fittings, whether that be the pipes, connections or indeed gas meters should only be attempted by any person who is competent to do so. So, unless you or somebody you know are a certified and registered gas engineer, you should not attempt to work on or install a gas meter yourself. Connecting mains gas supply to a meter is extremely dangerous and is also illegal for those who are not qualified to do so.
